The land that now makes up Athens was once inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Cherokee and Creek nations. In 1785, the state of Georgia acquired this land from these tribes through the Treaty of Augusta. Soon after, a small settlement began to form around what would become downtown Athens. In 1801, two men named John Milledge and Abraham Baldwin donated land to create a new town which they named “Athens” after the ancient Greek city. The University of Georgia was also established in Athens that same year as the first public university in America. During its early years, Athens experienced significant growth due to its location on major transportation routes between Savannah and Atlanta. It quickly became a center for commerce with cotton plantations surrounding it. However, during the Civil War era, Athens faced many challenges like other southern cities. The Union Army occupied it multiple times throughout the war and destroyed much of its infrastructure. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Athenians worked hard to rebuild their city’s economy which had been devastated by war. The city became known as “the Liverpool of the South” due to its booming music scene with bands like R.E.M., The B-52s, and Widespread Panic all calling Athens home. Today, Athens is still a vibrant city with a strong focus on education and community. The University of Georgia remains one of the top public universities in the country, attracting students from all over the world. Its downtown area is filled with local businesses, restaurants, and cultural events such as festivals celebrating art, film, food, and music. Athens’ rich history can be seen throughout its many historic landmarks such as antebellum homes like Ware-Lyndon House (currently being restored by our own graduate program here at UGA) or Infinite Energy Arena where popular musicians perform regularly nowadays! There are also numerous museums showcasing different aspects of Athens' past including Civil War exhibits at Athens Regional Library or even perhaps something else entirely different you never knew existed before checking it out yourself! In conclusion suggests we may want understand more about this wonderful place called "The Classic City" which reminds me of my own hometown now since I've been living here for nearly twenty-five years myself personally as well too mind you - so many memories and stories to share with others about Athens, Georgia!

They chose this location for its fertile land and proximity to major waterways which made it an ideal spot for agriculture and trade. This attracted many prominent figures to settle in Athens including future U.S. President Woodrow Wilson who attended school there.
