Columbus, Georgia is a city rich in history and culture. Located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Muscogee County, Columbus was founded in 1828 as a trading post for Native Americans and European settlers. The area where Columbus now stands has been inhabited by various Native American tribes for thousands of years. The Creek Indians were the dominant tribe in this region before European contact. They called the area "Coweta Falls" which means "broken arrow." This name referred to the series of rapids and waterfalls on the Chattahoochee River that made it difficult for boats to navigate. In 1733, James Oglethorpe established Georgia as Britain's thirteenth colony. He negotiated a treaty with the Creeks granting them land along both sides of the Chattahoochee River from its origin near Atlanta down to its confluence with Flint River at present-day Bainbridge, Georgia. In 1795, after several conflicts between settlers and Native Americans over land rights, another treaty was signed which ceded all Creek lands east of Mississippi river to United States government. In 1802, John Bennington established a ferry at Coweta Falls (now known as Eagle & Phenix Dam) making it possible for people to cross from Alabama into Georgia without having to travel further upstream or downstream. With this new connection between Alabama and Georgia came increased trade activity along this stretch of Chattahoochee River. In December 1827, four men met here with George Troup (Governor of State), Joshua Lamar (Surveyor General), John Woolfolk Jr., & Edmund Roberdeau Moseley III who surveyed site across river from Coweta Town Landing later named "Columbus". A year later on December 24th they platted out town square mile grid pattern streets running north-south intersected by east-west roads including Broadway that crossed river at foot of 14th street. The town grew quickly and became a hub for the cotton trade. In 1836, Columbus was officially incorporated as a city with a population of approximately 1,200 people. By the mid-19th century, Columbus had become one of the largest inland cotton markets in the world. Columbus played an important role in both the Civil War and Reconstruction era. During the Civil War, it served as a major supply center for Confederate troops due to its location on the Chattahoochee River. The Battle of Girard (now part of Phenix City) was fought just across the river from Columbus in April 1865 and is considered one of the last battles of the war. After Reconstruction, Columbus experienced rapid industrial growth thanks to industries such as textile mills, iron foundries, and lumber production.
