Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is a charming coastal town situated on the banks of the Charleston Harbor. Its rich history dates back to the 17th century when it was first inhabited by Native Americans. The Early Years: The area now known as Mount Pleasant was originally home to the Sewee tribe of Native Americans who called it “Jamestown”. They were one of several tribes that lived in what is now Charleston County before European settlers arrived. In 1680, English colonists established Charles Town (now Charleston) just across the harbor from present-day Mount Pleasant. In 1696, Colonel William Hill granted land to Captain Florentia O'Sullivan for his services during King Philip’s War. This grant included most of present-day Mount Pleasant. By 1706, O’Sullivan had built his home on this land which he named “Mount Pleasant Plantation” due to its scenic location overlooking the harbor. During this time period, large plantations flourished in and around Mount Pleasant thanks to fertile soil and an abundance of labor provided by enslaved Africans brought over by ship from West Africa. The main crops were indigo and rice which became major commodities for export throughout Europe.
