The area that would eventually become Rock Hill was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes including the Catawba Nation. These indigenous peoples lived off the land for thousands of years until European settlers arrived in the late 17th century. In 1760, Thomas Spratt acquired land from these native inhabitants which included present-day Rock Hill. In 1852, John Roddey established a plantation on this land which he named "Ebenezer." It was during this time that gold was discovered nearby leading to an influx of settlers into the area. The town soon became known as "Gold Hill" due to its connection with this precious metal. However, when gold mining declined in popularity after the Civil War ended many residents left Gold Hill resulting in its abandonment. Not long after Gold Hill's decline began did another group arrive looking to establish their own community - former Confederate soldiers seeking new opportunities during Reconstruction. One such soldier was D.B Johnson who purchased over 2,000 acres of land from John Roddey's heirs at $3 per acre with plans to develop a textile factory along what we now call Main Street. Johnson partnered with his brothers-in-law Dr.David Davega Sr., Dr.George W.Cassels Jr., Samuel Elliott White III (a local attorney), C.M Buchanan (an executive director), William H.Adams (a physician)and Ira B.Gish(who owned several mills himself). Together they founded Rock Hill Mills on April15th ,1881 bringing industry back into what had been abandoned farmland just twenty years prior. The town was officially incorporated as "Rock Hill" in 1892 and quickly became known for its thriving textile industry.
