However, it was not until European settlers arrived that Rock Hill truly began to take shape. The first known settlement in what is now Rock Hill was established by Scots-Irish immigrants around 1750 along an old trading path known as the Great Wagon Road. This road served as a major transportation route from Pennsylvania through Virginia and into North Carolina before eventually reaching South Carolina. The fertile land surrounding this road attracted many settlers who began to cultivate crops such as cotton, tobacco, and indigo. In 1836, John Hardin founded what would become known as Rock Hill on land he purchased from Isaac White Sr., one of the original settlers along the Great Wagon Road. Hardin saw potential in this area due to its strategic location between Charlotte, North Carolina and Columbia, South Carolina – two important cities at that time. He named his new town “Rocky Knoll” after a nearby geological formation made up of large granite rocks.
